What is a Timing Belt?

Man Fixing Timing Belt

Timing belts play a crucial role in how internal combustion engines work smoothly. Timing belts, also known as cambelts (timing chains for engines with larger bores and strokes), harmonize the movement of camshaft and crankshaft rotations. When both are in sync, the valves and pistons can operate correctly. Valves control air/fuel mixture intake and exhaust gas and push the pistons down as fuel ignites in the combustion chamber. When the time comes for a service check at the Volkswagen South Coast service center, contact our team!

How Much is a Timing Belt?

When a timing belt breaks, the valves won’t open and close at the right time, meaning they could hit the pistons and cause expensive repairs down the line — up to $2,000+ if the valves, water pump, and pistons were damaged. If there is no damage, Orange drivers can expect to pay around $500 to $1,000 with parts and labor costs. If your timing belt isn’t broken and doesn’t need repairs, it may need replacing. Most manufacturers recommend replacing the belt every 60,000 miles to 100,000 miles. Check out our parts center for a more accurate price estimate.

Signs Your Car Needs a New Timing Belt

No matter if your car has a rubber belt or a timing chain, it’ll be easy to tell when there’s a problem on your Irvine drive. Should you notice any of the following red flags, you’ll want to schedule car repair at our service center:

  • Ticking noise coming from the engine
  • The engine won’t turn over
  • The engine acts up between 2000 – 4000 RPM
  • The engine misfires
  • More smoke and fumes than normal
  • Oil leaks from the front of the motor

Timing Belts vs. Timing Chains: What’s the Difference?

Timing belts and timing chains have the same function. The main difference is what materials they are made from and where they’re located. Timing chains are constructed of metal, while timing belts are made of reinforced rubber. Since timing belts are made of a softer material, they tend to be quieter than chains and can be found outside of the engine. Timing chains, on the other hand, are found inside the engine and use engine oil for lubrication.
