Electric Car Charging Options

How long does it take to charge an electric car? With different options available, it depends on what kind of charging level and method you choose. Here are the different electric car charging options:

  • Domestic Outlet/Home Charging (Level 1): A standard three-prong outlet with 110V/120V doesn’t charge an electric vehicle at great speeds, but it’s good for plugging your car in overnight so that it’s charged in the morning. With level one charging, you can usually expect about 24 hours for a full charge to be complete.
  • Installed & Brand-Approved Domestic Charging (Level 2): Level 2 charging is usually at 240V or higher and is a brand-specific charger. Because of this, you’ll be able to fully charge your electric vehicle in a matter of hours. Sometimes, you can expect up to an 80% charge in 30 minutes or more with this kind of charging.
  • Public Charging: If you need to charge on the go during your Costa Mesa commute, then you can use public charging, which can usually be found at hotels, gas stations, grocery stores, and other convenient places. Plus, more public charging places are being added all the time. While the charging times on these public charging devices can vary, you can usually expect level 2 type charging.

Usual Charging Electric Car Charging Time: Domestic Charging

Here is how domestic charging varies from level 1 charging to level 2 charging:

  • Level 1: Usually takes 24 hours or more for a full charge.
  • Level 2: Usually can reach a full charge in a matter of hours. With Level 2 DC charging, you can get a full charge in 20-30 minutes.

If you have a hybrid vehicle, you can usually get a full charge in about 1-4 hours since they don’t rely solely on electricity.

Usual Charging Electric Car Charging Time: Public Charging

Public charging stations offer 22 kW of charging, 43-50 kW rapid charging, and 150 kW rapid charging. For reference, most home chargers offer 3.7kW or 7 kW charging. With some vehicles, you could get a full charge in around an hour. Most other times, you can expect anywhere from 4-11 hours for a full charge with public charging.
